Opinion

So, this is my last entry for the whole blog. :P

What I think about LHP459
- It was fun while it lasted, Dr Jafre always had some nostalgic story that has something to do with him to tell to us. From his schooling years right to the lanca pullers. XD
- It can actually improve a person's self esteem to speak out more in front of everybody, voice out their opinions and whatnots in English.
- I was quite happy when Dr Jafre asked us to do a blog, simply because I'm a blogger myself (for 4 years haha BRAG BRAG BOAST BOAST. XP). I think an English blog can help us to learn the language more (provided it was written in proper English and NOT Manglish or Singlish or any other broken English), and it also can help us to improve in our writing.
- Eventhough this class is called "English for Interpretation", we did nothing on interpreting stuff. Haha. But as Dr Jafre said, interpretation has a wide meaning. I can't actually argue on that.
- I think everybody, and not just mostly BATI students should take this paper because one, it is a fully 100% coursework paper (no final exam yippie!!) and two, it's fun!

Ok I'm done. Can I get my A now Dr Jafre??? HOHOHO.

Selamat Hari Raya, Maaf Zahir Batin from me. =)

Trishaw Pullers

For the laaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaast project of LHP459, we were asked to do a group presentation on any topic that we chose. My group chose "Trishaw Pullers". We went around Tanjung to interview some of the trishaw pullers and to snap some pictures. As usual, I'm the photographer. Haha.

I did take some videos, but at that time my camera has decided to be a rebel and started to make the video blur like it was out of focus when I was recording.

Two weeks after we went to do our project, turns out that I didn't change my camera resolution from 6MP to VGA, that's why it blurred when I took videos. Cheh buang karan ja.

Joyce did all the power point slides while other members contributed on what to put and what to talk. I gave the song "Abang Beca" by the late Broery Marantika to her because it was PERFECT for this presentation.

So, on Wednesday, we presented our topic. It was going quite smooth. I'm a bit dissapointed because we didn't have any video (every other group that presented has a video attached with their presentation huhuhuhu) but oh well, the damage is done. I felt very happy because one burden has gone!! HAHAHA.

Bloggers responsible for their own writing???

Definitely. You should be responsible for everything that you do. Yes, a blog is a place where one is free to talk about anything and everything, but I think there should be a limit. Just look at J/eff Ooi's case for example. This is what happened when you've gone too far...

...or maybe they can't handle the truth? Truth hurts, as the saying goes. You just need to swallow it.

I still think bloggers should be responsible for their own writing.

Yeah, I have no more ideas to talk about. Sue me. NOT literally.

Syariah Law as Malaysia's Law?

Can it really be implemented? Let's see the definition of syariah law. Syariah is the dynamic body of Islamic religious law. The term means "way". It is the legal framework within which the public and some private aspects of life are regulated for these living in a legal system based on Muslim principles of jurisprudence.

It deals with many aspects of day-to-day life, including politics, economics, banking, business, contracts, family, sexuality, hygiene and social issues. It's divided into 2 sections:
a) The acts of worship
b) Human interaction

However, most people - when mentioned about Syariah Law - only think about marriage and hudud, and they fear hudud the worst.

In my opinion, we still need the common law. Maybe we can implement Syariah law in banking, economics, business and others related, but not in every aspect of life. Not yet, at least.

Last Minute

We were forced to write lyrics of our own and sing to it. First thing came up to my mind, "WHAT THE HELL, WE'RE NOT PROFESSIONAL SONG WRITERS YOU KNOW." And we have, like, one week to it.

After much time of brainstorming - or rather after 6 plates of nasi lemak, kopi-o-kow-yang-lupa-bubuh-gula, teh ais and orange juice, we've decided to use the tune of SexyBack for our song. The song is about the story of the students doing assignments.

The next week we sang it to the class. The lecturer said the beat is too happy but our song is kinda sad so we should change our song. It's not meant to be sad ya' know. We were going for the funny and not serious kind of songs. Like I'm Just A Kid by Simple Plan or Teenagers by My Chemical Romance or even Happy Song by Liam Lynch (okay the last one is really really not serious kind of song. Ha). So, okayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy we change the song. We have less than a day to re-write it. This time we used the beat of Last Kiss by Pearl Jam. Only that we don't have the minus one for it. Yours truly, will be playing the guitar. Hah. This is the lyric that we came out with:

Last Minute

**Oh where oh where can my paper be
I’m panicking, it’s killing me
I’ve searched everywhere that I could not rest
So I think I’m gonna go really crazy…I guess

I was in my room, I was lazing around
Hunger got to me, you can hear the sound
Armed with money, I went to McD
Ordered two burgers and a value meal
I was so full, headed back to my room
Switch on my laptop and started to type
The long long lines and the boring phrase
The painful task that giiiiiiiives me stress

Oh why oh why can’t I do it right??
I’ve tried my best, I cannot fight
This is what happens when u do last minute
There is no time for me to cry…it’s too late

When I woke up the rain was pouring down
My room mate’s sleeping, without a sound
My conscience struck me, oh I knew I had to work
With heavy heart and sleepy eyes
I lifted my head, looked at the screen and screamed
Where on earth has my paper been?
I tried to search, I’m getting really pissed
The result was none, I won’t live in peace
Well now it’s gone eventho I tried to find
I lost my work, my A…that night.

**

The meaning behind this lyric is kinda straight forward. The song is about a student doing his assignment on the last minute, and his laptop decided to eat up his work. It's about his frustrations.

The conclusion? I suck at playing guitar. Nuff said.

Andrea Bocelli

Last two weeks or so, our class were forced to listen to a song. Andrea Bocelli's song to be exact. The substitute lecturer (I forgot her name, sorry) even switched off the lamps - so that we can feel the song, she said.

And so the song began. LAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAALAAAADEEDAHDEEDAHHHHHHHHHH WOOOAAAAAAAAA DEEEEDAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA.

It's Andrea Bocelli. What do you expect? Him singing like George Michael singing Careless Whisper or heck, like Prince singing Purple Rain? He's an operatic tenor and a classical crossover singer, for God's sake. Of course you'll be hearing these opera songs and whatnots.

It was pure 3 or 4 minutes of pain. At least for me. First, I hate, no LOATHE classical soprano opera laaadeeedah glass breaking songs. Second, I don't even understand the language of the song. Was it Italian? Spanish? French? Planet Zargus? Only Lord knows. After the song ended, we were asked to interpret our feeling about the song. What do you think he's blabbering? Was it sad? Inspirational? Boring?

"IT BORES ME TO DEATH," I would like to shout. But I just kept quiet. She asked a few of us to come in front and talk about the song. Melati even sang a song from the Everly Brothers.

And at last the English for Interpretation class has turned into a vocal and singing class. With Melati singing that Everly Brothers' song and Sri Achanti having a duet with the lecturer singing When You Believe.

Oh well, at least they have kept me amused.

Tunku Abdul Rahman

As we all know we have just celebrated our 50th Malaysia's Independence Day. Many people had contributed to our independence, and of them is Tunku Abdul Rahman...

Tunku Abdul Rahman Putra al-Haj Ibni Almarhum Sultan Abdul Hamid Halim Shah was born on 8th Febuary 1903 in Istana Pelamin, Alor Setar, Kedah. He was the 14th son and the 20th child of Sultan Abdul Hamid Halim Shah. His mother, Cik Menjalara, was the Sultan's sixth wife and the daughter of Siamese nobleman, Luang Naraborirak, a Thai district officer during the reign of King Rama V of Thailand.

He began his education in 1909 at a Malay Primary School in Alor Setar and was later transferred to the Government English School. When he was eight, he was sent to study at Debsirin School in Bangkok, along with his three brothers. In 1915, he returned and studied at Penang Free School. In 1918, he was awarded a Kedah State Scholarship to further his studies at St Catherine's college in the University of Cambridge. There, he obtained his Bachlelor of Arts degree.

When he returned to Malaya, he worked in the Kedah public service and was appointed as the District Officer of Kulim and Sungai Petani. Some time later, he returned to England to complete his law studies at the Inner Temple, but his studies came to a halt because of the outbreak of World War II. He resumed his studies in 1947 and in 1949, he qualified for the Bar. After his return to Malaya in 1949, Tunku Abdul Rahman was first posted at the Legal Officer's office in Alor Star. He later asked to be transferred to Kuala Lumpur, where he became a Deputy Public Prosecutor. He was later appointed as president of the Sessions Court.

He has achieved many things in his life, so now I'm going to talk about some of his achievements. In 1955 he led a delegation to London to seek independence for Malaya, but failed. In 1957 he went again to London to negotiate Malayan independence and thus 31st August 1957 was the decided date for our independence.

One of his greatest achievements was the formation of Malaysia in 1963. He also established the Islamic Welfare Organisation (PERKIM), helped to set up Organisation of Islamic Conference (OIC) - he was appointed as the first Secretary General. As an avid sportsman, he initiated an international football tournament, the Pestabola Merdeka in 1957.

In his later years, Abdul Rahman lived in his house in Penang. The Tunku died on 6 December 1990 at the age of eighty-seven, and was laid to rest at the Langgar Royal Mausoleum in Alor Star.

Les Choristes

I've been ignoring this blog for nearly a month! Sorry readers. Huhuhu.

On the 1st August, we watched a French movie called Les Choristes (The Chorus)

In my point of view, this movie is more or less the same as the German movie I watched a couple of weeks before this, "das fliegende Klassenzimmer (The Flying Classroom)" [My Deutsch teacher made us go and watch it!!]. The story is about a group of boys who are studying in a correctional school, called Fond de L'Etang. Clement Mathieu is a new supervisor in that school. He arrived with an enthusiasm but what he doesn't know that the boys in the school are troubled boys.

He arranged a choir group so that he can control their naughtiness. Bit by bit, the boys became attached to him. Even Morhange, 'the angel face' (who, by the way, has an angelic voice!!) has liked him...

The principle of the school is a strict man. His motto is "Action, reaction". He treats the kids like they are in a military camp.

From this movie, I learned that we can't treat other people badly. There are other ways to bend the naughty boys, and Mathieu has proved it. This is a must-watch movie. :D

Teacher punishing students

Lately we've been bombarded with the teacher-punishing-students-in-a-hard-way news.

First there's the news where a teacher hit her student with her high heels (ouch!), and then came the news that a warden force a whole group of students squat in a dirty pool because apparently, there was a sanitary pad found in the toilet bowl.

In my opinion, yes, the teachers are being harsh with their students. But on the other hand, I think students now are way to pampered. In our parents' time, our grandparents will ask the teacher to punish their child if they do wrong, as long as their child's bone are not broken. But nowadays, parents gives them everything. In their eyes, their children are always right. When a teacher punished a student for not doing their homework or breaking the school law, their parents will immediately come to the school and threaten to sue the school.

But sometimes, I think the teachers are trying to release their stress on their students. As we know, nowadays, teachers are not just teaching, they need to attend meetings, seminars and whatnots. So basically, they have a lot of work to do, plus with the students' attitude, it can be stressful. I know it is wrong to channel their stress to the students, but after all, we are just humans.

Will this issue can be stopped? As long as a parent continue pampering their already way-too-pampered lil munchkin, and as long as a teacher continue channeling her/his stress on their students, it can will never be stopped.

Young Malaysian

Okay I should've written about this topic last week, but I've totally forgotten which email I used to create this blog. But whatever, let's move on to the topic.

Am I proud to be a Malaysian? Hell yes. Why? Let's see, we are free from wars, we are free from natural disasters, we can live in harmony with other races, and we can eat roti canai even at 4 in the morning (allllllllll I knowww is, you got to give me everythinggggggg. Okay off topic. :P)!! Need I say more?

Well apparently yes because I need the marks for this course. Haha.

Compared ourselves with neighbouring countries, we are in the lucky zone. Our country is a developing country. We don't have to kill each other for a living. But putting all these blessings aside, what we, as a young Malaysian, can do for our country?

Not an exactly easy question to be answered isn't it?

Basically there are a lot that we can do for our country. We need to prepare ourselves with knowledge, so that no outsider can intrude us. We may not be colonized in physical form like what happened to us 50 years ago, but they might colonized us through our mind. If that happens, no one can save our country anymore.

Secondly, we need to work hand-in-hand so that we can make Malaysia more developed than now. We need to put our country on the map. Honestly, I don't think many people, especially in the Europe know where Malaysia is. Heck, if they do know, they might think we still live on trees! I have a few friends who are studying overseas. They said, whenever they mentioned that they are from Malaysia, they need to explain that our country is "in between Thailand and Singapore" in order for the people to know where in the world our country is. Do we want this to happen in 10 years time? Hopefully not.

Speaking of overseas, I think Malaysian students who are studying overseas are like the little ambassadors of Malaysia. They can promote our country and our culture to the world! Isn't that nice?

I think I will stop here. Oh before I forgets, I hope the Malaysian football team will train harder next time. If Iraq, a war country, can win the AFC Asian Cup 2007, why not us? I'm very embarassed with this fact. :P

First friggin post!

This blog is created for writing out my thoughts about the topics we discussed in my LHP459 class. It'll be in fully English, with loads of rubbish and craps. Hahaha.

Toodles.
